[Press Release] Canossa Hospital has actively participated in the public hospital patient transfer program to alleviate the heavy burden of the public hospital system

The current Covid pandemic has caused a significant burden on the Hong Kong public hospital system.  Canossa Hospital has actively participated in the public hospital patient transfer program to alleviate the heavy burden of the public hospital system.  We screened over 20 cases through the program.  We received 7 cases from the HA hospitals (up to 29th August 2022), of which 3 have been discharged recently.  The number of patients admitted under the program has reached 80% of the proposed bed number committed by our hospital.  The current bed occupancy rate is 50% due to the three discharged cases.

Factors hindering the transfer include the location of our hospital, the preference of patients (or relatives), the limitation of the hospital facilities, and the condition of patients, etc.  Communication, collaboration, and compromisation between patients (or relatives), public hospitals, and private hospitals were essential in successful transfer.  All the transfer decisions shall be based on the utmost benefit for patients.  To avoid information asymmetric and delay that might cause misunderstanding for the public, our hospital will update the number of transfer cases regularly.

According to the availability of resources, Canossa Hospital may increase the number of beds offered to HA patients via the  Program.  Besides the number of HA patient admissions, Canossa Hospital has admitted 64 HA patients to perform the Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty procedure at a price similar to HA, sponsored by the Tai Hung Fai Charity Foundation since April.  The mission of Canossa Hospital is to provide quality holistic care to the community in the Spirit of Christ.  Like the other moderate-scale private hospital, Canossa is facing challenges such as the shortage of workforce, lack of infection facilities, etc.  Still, we will maintain our quality services and work closely with the HKSAR Government and Hospital Authority under a trustworthy and cooperative relationship to overcome this pandemic hard time – together with Hong Kong citizens.
