Psychosocial Impacts of SARS
General
public perception of SARS:
- Unpredictable
- Over-estimate the severity of the risk
- Interpersonal infection
- Uncontrollable
Intrapersonal
level:
- Denial and fear of diseases and death
- Severe sense of insecurity, anxiety, fear and loss of control
- Guilt, self-blame and worries of the patients for infecting
family members and friends
Interpersonal
level:
- Being alert to the community and environment
- Undue self-defense, mistrust among people
- Negative emotional projection, anxiety towards the infection
of virus
- Ambiguous towards participation in community or social activities
Virus
is blocked by masks, smiles, trust, kindness are blocked too...
Social aloofness and estrangement happens...Shall we stop for
a while (10 days), slow down from our busy life...?
Sacrifice
Show empathy
Willing to sacrifice for the sake of others
Appreciation
Appreciation of life
Express gratitude and love towards family members
Appreciate others' efforts (e.g. kindness from government and
hospitals)
Reflection
Reflection on meaning of life and life-styles
Reflection on interpersonal relationship
Support
Construct social support network
Actively care and support others, while willing to accept others'
care and support
For
the community...
Express care and support in a more creative way
Don't life go on in a boring way!
Stay calm and rational in response to different kinds of news.
Don't over-react!
Care and pay attention to those who are diseased, emotionally
distressed and at high-risk.
Don't overlook them in the heat of SARS!
Participate in community and social activities
Don't get panicked!
Take a deep breath...Meditate...Love & care...
Facial expressions are masked, but love, hope, acceptance
and forgiveness still go on...
The
secret of overcoming negativity is to understand that what you
behold in the world reflects back to you what you are in yourself.
Work at self-transformation. Stop thinking that the world owes
it to you to grant your every wish!
