What is Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy or Physical Therapy is a therapeutic approach making use of physical means such as exercise, manual skills, ergonomic principles, electro-physical agents like hot-pad, ice-pack, ultrasound (US), short-wave diathermy (SWD), interferential therapy (IFT), spinal traction, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), etc. and even acupuncture.

The usual aims of physiotherapy include symptomatic relief, patient education, prevention of complications, and rehabilitation through muscle strengthening, joint mobilization, and functional training, etc. such that the physical functions of an individual can be maximized for a better quality of life.

Physiotherapy has the history of about 70 years in developed countries, while the profession has been established for more than 40 years in Hong Kong. Physiotherapy has become more and more popular in the past decades and is now generally recognized as a comprehensive and effective therapeutic alternative other than medicine and surgical interventions.

In Hong Kong, only registered physiotherapists who hold a valid license from the Physiotherapists Registration Board in addition to a recognized professional qualification in the area can apply physiotherapy service.
