| Cardiovascular
disease is a leading cause of death in Hong Kong. The major risk factors
for coronary heart disease are smoking, hypertension, lipid abnormalities
and diabetes mellitus. Other risk factors are:age, male sex, obesity, stress,
lack of exercise, diet, excessive alcohol consumption and family history
of heart disease. Symptoms of heart disease include chest pain, palpitation, shortness of breath and ankle swelling. Studies have shown that severe symptoms arc often a late manifestation of coronary disease and these should no longer be the starting point for rational investigation and treatment. The Framing-ham study has shown that half of sudden cardiac deaths are asymptomatic, 15% of heart attacks are silent and another 25% are unrecognised.
