Neonatal Hearing Screening

Hearing impairment is one of the common disabilities discovered during the neonatal period. Congenital deafness accounts for at least 50% of all deafness in children. Moreover, in Hong Kong the incidence of congenital deafness is estimated to be between 3-6 per 1000 live births. Delay in diagnosis may lead to permanent compromise in the child's language development, emotion expression, social and academic performance. The conventional infant hearing screening by distraction test has the disadvantage of low sensitivity and specificity. Besides the results can be reliable only when the baby reaches 6 months in age

Hearing loss may occur at any point along the hearing pathway. Thus, Canossa Hospital uses the ALGO3 (www.natus.com ) screener, which tests the entire hearing pathway, from the outer ear to the brainstem. It detects hearing loss at 30dB or greater, enabling the detection of even mild ranges of impairment. It possesses 100% sensitivity. Therefore you can be confident that a baby with hearing loss will not be missed.

Cost: HK$600 / Test
